Drinks for the Season.

Just because Christmas has ended that does not mean all the goodies and warm beverages have to end as well.

No, I do protest. You need something to toast the New Year with.

As long as the weather is cold enough to warrant it I shall be making warm tasty drinks :D
Mainly, because I found too many delicious recipes that I haven't had the time to make.

Here are few drinks that I really really must try making.

Okay, I know what you're thinking, this is not a drink but you can't have all these beverages and nothing with it ^_^

I've always wanted to decorate my cocoa with something fancier than marshmallows.

It's practically December and yes, I still have a ton of Christmas shopping to do for the people on my Santa list...where is the time going???

Weekend Plans

Friday is here at last! These weeks are just flying by and there is so much to do and prepare for with the holidays coming closer and closer!

I need to start accumulating my Christmas gifts soon or at the very least finish the gift list by next week...I'm determined this year to do Christmas gifting the right way :) No more of that last minute scrabbling for me!

You Know What Time It Is...

Yep, it is that time of year to make your house either as scary as it can possibly be or as cutely creepy as possible--You may have guessed but I'm going for cute this year ^_^

(My cousin is planning on being a ninja, sadly he doesn't want to look like this little guy :)
As always I turned to pinterest for my household inspiration I found some fantastic ideas to make a creative and charming, little ghostly--hangout.

I must admit to you dear readers, I'm one those sad little individuals who is utterly horrible when it comes to carving pumpkins. It always looks like Freddy got a hold of my pumpkin and not in the cool way :(

And to go with all of my spooky decorations we need monstrous cakes like this to truly do the holiday right. So, I'll put a little focus on the desserts too--after all, Halloween is all about sweeties.

The more I look at adorable food pictures the more I think this is where I should focus my efforts.

My Drawings.

My art midterm has passed and as promised I'm going to show you a couple of my drawings from the class.

Here is one of my drawings from before the class. I drew this from my imagination, before the class I didn't try to make any still life drawings.

First assignment was a cross contour drawing of a tree branch (Pencil on drawing paper).

Second assignment was sighting. I drew an odd sort of candle lamp/fountain I'd gotten for Christmas (Pencil on drawing paper).

Assignment three and four was on value. Here is a drawing of three rocks on white (Pencil on drawing paper).

Three white eggs on white (charcoal on drawing paper).

Three white eggs on black (charcoal on drawing paper).

This I did because I was bored. Now that I think about it, I wish I would've drawn something else. You've no idea how awkward it is asking your drawing teacher if she wants to see your leg. ^_^ (pencil on drawing paper)

Another drawing from my imagination. I really wanted to use my colored pastels, and we were taking forever to get to them in class (we still haven't used them yet), so I drew a flamenco dancer on a stage (charcoal and pastels on drawing paper).

The latest assignment. A pair of black boots on white (charcoal on drawing paper).

I forgot to take a picture of my midterm before I turned it in so I took a picture of it during the critique. (mine is the on the top, second from the right) Now you get to see some of my fellow classmates drawings. I think everyone did really well.

Drawing update.

In the summer I was talking about how I'd gotten a drawing book called Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. I was trying to complete the book before the summer break was over and I started school again; because I would be taking an art class in the fall.

Well, that didn't really work out so I ended up taking the drawing class before finishing the book...I still haven't had a chance to finish it but I plan doing so. It's been really helpful--kinda hard to master in some areas, but still a great tool--it's on my bucket list.

Anyways, I'm taking the art class now and it has really improved my drawing skills a lot! I also think the techniques that I learned from the book have helped me out a lot in the this class.

On the last post a lot of people were asking to see some of my work once I finished reading, which I haven't, but after my midterm (at the end of this week) I'll post up some class work :D

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this latest selection of some of my favorite images from other fellow artists around the web.

Random Stuff: Note Worthy Staircases

Normally staircases aren't really anything we ponder about in artistic musings, and quite frankly we tend to avoid them when we can ;P

But today I've found some images of staircases that are worthy of our attention and maybe even worth a little climb...to better marvel at and better appreciate of their uniqueness.

Crush: Cute Craftrooms

Lately, I've been wanting to get back into crafts. You know, making creative books with magical pasts. I've also gotten into jewelry creation. It's pretty fun!

Anyway, to the point, My supplies are everywhere! I try to stack my book broad and end papers as neatly as possible but then I can't find the pieces I'm looking for.
And the things that won't stack like jewelry and fabric just kind of sit in a heap.

So I was thinking I really need to dust off my organization skills when it comes to my craft room; add some shelves and what not.

Naturally I looked on the internet for little tricks and tips on organization and how to make the most of your space.

Because I do share a craft room with my sister and we kind of need to share the storage space. So I've got to make the best of my half of the room.

I was also thinking about painting my half a different color, me and the sister have very different tastes in color. I want my wall to be decorated, I want to paint a mural or something like that on my wall; it's the artist in me.

Olivia likes solid colors; to each her own. This is when dividing the room in half comes in handy ^_^

I'm excited, I've got all these plans running around in my head I can't wait to whip my space into shape. I'll finally be able to work without having to reorganizing my stacks each time I begin :D

Music For Your Monday: Spencer Day

I first heard his song on 'The Wave', a local radio station, and couldn't get it out of my head, in a good way.

So I looked for his channel on YouTube and found a wonderful collections of his songs.

He has a great jazzy voice and a nice easy rhythm to his songs. He's totally won me over to his style of music.

Watch out Michael Buble a new Vagabound has come to town ;P

But when I tell a lot of people about him they have no idea who I'm talking about so I decided today, to share the secret.

So far this is my favorite of his songs.

Concept Design: Source Code

Source Code is a thrilling mystery suspense film about a soldier who wakes up to find himself in a strangers body on a doomed train ride.

The train was bombed one morning while in transit to Chicago and Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal), a US soldier, is able to return to the train eight minutes before it explodes via the Source Code, in the hopes that he can discover the bomb and avert the tragedy.

Even though the film has been out for ages, I still don't want to give away too much about the story 'cause it's a really good movie and I think you should experience it for yourselves. But I think I can be a little more helpful, as to what it is about, than the trailer.

The story line is a simple one of a man going against-all-odds to protect something he values, but the way it unwinds is brilliant and intense.

Stevens is a military pilot who is virtually placed into the body of one of the male passengers on the train, where he repeatedly returns to the last eight minutes of the man's life in order to identify the bomber, and foil his attempt to detonate. He is able to do this through a complex mind system called the Source Code.

They have a far more fascinating and thorough way of explaining it in the movie of course ^_^.

This movie is nowhere near as complex as Inception but it is definitely worthy of the comparison. The story was interesting and suspenseful. It kept you on the edge of your seat as you approached every twist and turn with Stevens trying to figure out just what was going on.

The story's timing was great! It didn't leave you hanging in suspense for too long nor did it divulge any information too quickly--not to mention the love story aspect was very well paced too, and for that it was very believable.

Oh and I haven't even mentioned how cool the VFX were. The train exploded like twenty times and each time was different, vivid, and realistic. There were also other cool little VFX treats that I won't spoil for you.

Inspiring Interior.

Lately I've been feeling like adding a bit of pizzazz to my bed room with a few colorful accessories.

I'm just having a world of trouble deciding what to add.
I'm very bad with choosing these things.

The first idea I had was to add a bookshelf.

I really love this idea here, where the bookshelf is also used to house other things. But I don't have that many books. Mostly just e-books ^_^ but I do have a lot of crafting tools that could take up a space like this...or they might be too big...hmm.

I love this little leisurely reading area but I don't think I'd put it in my room unless .
I'd probably have to turn it into a writing desk first.

Now these ideas for decoration where just adorable.
I love the little set of chests and the plates are so elegant.

I really love the wall paper here, I've also found some really great wall paper on Etsy too. Maybe adding some wall paper will give my room the creative touch it needs. Though, I had always wanted to use my wall as a canvas for my own paintings. But I'll wait till I get a little (lot) better at painting.

I'm not sure where I'd put this but I really like it!
Maybe I'll turn it into a pencil holder.

I could use something like this :D

Have a Magical Weekend...

Busy Mondays

Well it's back to school for the sis and I -- summer vacation is officially over -- and boy has it been one hectic Monday!

{This teddy bear is too cute!}

Campus was packed and utterly chaotic, as it tends to be for the first 3 weeks or so before people finally get settled down, and the heat didn't help make things easier.

There were just so many people it was insane! Forget about trying to get through hallways comfortably or even the campus for that matter it just wasn't happening, haha :)

Even though it stinks having to say goodbye to my wonderful 2 week vacation I'm excited to get back into school and complete some more classes. I'm about two full semesters away from achieving my Associates Degree so I'm super thrilled!

I can't wait for that day to come, it's going to be so rewarding :)

Apart from the heat and the hectic first day of school, today has been a pretty nice day; it's actually cooled down immensely from the blazing afternoon temperatures making it bearable to sit outside (which is awesome!).

So how is your Monday going so far? Any big plans for the week?

Major Love!

Since entering college I think I've changed my major a grand total of five times, and that's not even counting the times I changed it back to a previously discarded one. However, now I've found THE major that truly suits me!
It combines most everything I'd love to do for a living.

And the major is...Animation and Visual FX, (I'm mostly drawn to the visual FX parts :)

If you're curious as to what one might do with such a degree I'll tell you...if you already know just humor me, I'm so excited I just want to talk about it :D

There are several possibilities; animation is useful for creating cute little family friendly movies like Pixar does, it's also a required skill for CGI production.

(They finally got his nose right! ^_^)
So if you want an alien ship in your movie but alien ship rentals are too expensive and the national guard won't allow you to actually use it to destroy LA, I'll be able to do it for you...in a strictly virtual way :D

It's amazing what people can do with computers and software today and I'm just so excited to learn how to take my flat little paper drawings into stunning 3D. It'll be so awesome!

I can hardly find words to express my excitement at having found a major that fits me so perfectly!

Peach Sangria

Recipe via My Recipes

(Makes 8 cups)

Ingredients:

1 bottle white wine

1 cup peach schnapps

1/2 cup frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed

2 nectarines, sliced

1 cup green or red grapes, whole or sliced

Preparation:

Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher. Cover and chill at least 2 hours or overnight. Stir before serving.

I can't wait to try this recipe it looks delicious!

Only I'm going to make a slight adjustment and try it out using grape juice instead of wine and see if it will work as an alcohol free refreshment :)

Good Times

Yesterday we went to YogurtLand to celebrate the ending of another semester and just grab something sweet.

{Sarah has a gummy worm obsession, look at all those worms!}

This has been a really challenging week (with final exams) but it has been productive and it was nice to be able to wind down and relax over a delicious cup of frozen yogurt after all the cramming.

I'm definitely looking forward to a very restful weekend!

Bike Envy!

I know you've seen them, at the beach or the farmers market, maybe you've glimpsed one as you were driving but they're every where and they're sooo cute!

Yes, I'm talking about BEG cruiser bikes.

I've seen these sweet little things so much and I'm totally in love, I really want one. They'd be prefect for beach trips or just rolling about parks or looking cute anywhere.

Friends, this case of bike envy is serious.

But I just don't see myself getting one anytime soon. My dear little GT is still kicking and it's a pretty good bike itself.
Sure it's one purple paint job from being prefect but it's quite the loyal bike and I couldn't bring myself to end our great friendship.

Because...well my dear GT, as I roam around on it *whispers* has got shocks and sooo many speeds ;P

Gourmet Grilling.

Lately we've been having some really wonderful weather and I've been racking my brain for all sorts of excuses to stay outdoors. But after all the hiking, running, biking and swims one can get a little hungry :D

So I thought of another out door activity that is a little less exhausting.

That's right, grilling!
Aren't these little stuffed jalapenos too cute

My favorite type of cooking is definitely grilling, I don't need an excuse to do it, I will grill anything; chicken, shrimp, potatoes, onions...cookies!
Just kidding :D

I just love that fresh off the grill taste, sometimes I even whip out the old barbee in the winter. It gets cold but as long as it's not raining it works.

So I've been looking for some tasty grilling ideas to spice up my little recipe book and the results were mouth watering ^_^

A couple of things my mom taught me how to grill were corn and pizza!

I'm sure I would've thought of corn after grilling everything in my fridge but the pizza...

I don't think I would've come up with that on my own, but it is delicious!

I mean, homemade pizza is pretty good to start off with but when you grill it, it's so awesome!
You should try it!

Random Stuff: Castles and the like...

Even if you can't possibly find anything to do with the space, I know I couldn't, everyone has wanted a castle at some point in their life.

I'm totally smitten with the bags and clutches from Milloo's, especially the bags and clutches made from the stripped material and paired with leather :)

Aren't they just gorgeous?!

I really love this design but...

This bag is more of my style, the over the shoulder strap would be perfect for taking on bike riding trips and then it has the versatility of being a regular handbag which is just awesome...yes I am incredibly in love with her shop!

I haven't been able to stop ogling the bags since I caught sight of her store on Etsy's front page the other evening.

Photo Inspiration

Friends, I have a final project coming up for that awesome film photography class I keep raving on and on about and I could totally use your help :)

Basically the project is for us to go out and do a night shoot, without a flash or light, just raw night shots.

It's going to be a little tricky because I'm not going to know how the pictures look (or if there even coming out right at all) until I develop the film and then make the photographs but I'm not too worried about that part yet...

The first obstacle I have is deciding what to shoot.

Originally I had the idea of doing the "classic" city lights and building photo shoot but I'm sure a lot of people in my class are probably thinking of doing that too. And that's where I could use your help :)

Do you have any ideas of what I could shoot? Busy streets and shops was another idea I had, but I'm open to any suggestions :)

Good Weekends :)

How was your weekend friends? Mine was actually pretty successful even though nothing went according to planned.
We didn't make it out to the beach as I hoped we might, and I didn't get a lot of sewing done or cooking for that matter but I did manage to do other stuff that was just as fun and rewarding...

Things that got accomplished this weekend:

1. I had the opportunity to join a couple of friends on an awesome 40 + mile bike ride up in the mountains...it was amazing and so beautiful! It got me all inspired to start planning a camping trip...

2. Finished snapping pictures for my photography class...and yes I will be sharing them very soon with you guys :)

3. Cleaned, cleaned, cleaned! My house gets so messy so fast!

4. Got plenty of relaxation in and plenty of sleep! Ahhh naps are so refreshing!

5. And lastly had the chance to enjoy a couple of new movies with the fam :)

My latest Etsy crush is this sweet little dress shop Alexandra Grecco.
I especially love this picture because it has all my favorites in it :D

All her items are so perfectly feminine and graceful, they're like goddess attire.

I love this little cranberry dress, very elegant.

One thing that is true about Alexandra's store is, she has classic style. Her designs are confidant, beautiful and easy going. This is part of the reason I love her store, the other reason and the biggest is the obvious one, her designs are gorgeous!

Okay I know I say this a lot but I've found a new favorite photo place! It is official, Pinterest is the go to place for awesome photos especially of food!!

Okay, so I just gave away my whole reason for liking this place so much (tee hee :). But come on l0.0k at all these delicious treats!

It's a great source of inspiration if one is looking for ideas for summer treats.

It's starting to get really, really hot these days, and attempting to stroll around campus and bike all over town in jeans is just not cutting it anymore!

Along with some new summer shorts, skirts, and cutoffs I've been planning on sewing for the summer clothing collection I'm working on for the sis and myself, I have been wanting to add in a few rompers.

They are just so cute and stylish and not to mention comfy for these hotter temperatures, I simply can't wait to get started :)

Summer Accessories.

Summertime when the living is easy...you really want to spend a lot of time outdoors.

Whether it's playing sports, (like that one above I've seen it in so many movies but still don't know how to play :) jogging, yoga or just chilling ^_^

Whatever the activity, the great outdoors are so inviting this time of year.

Along with Summer weather comes those lovely Summer accessories by which to enjoy summer even more!

1. Patios

A little creative spot outside the house but not completely outdoors; it's like an over grown porch. And who doesn't love bigger!

What would Summer be without those backyard pools.

I've wanted one since...a long time now :D

Happenings...

Well it certainly has been a long time since I've updated here!
How have you all been? Is your Summer panning out well? Squeeze any vacations in yet? :)

A few cool things that have been going on lately and what has been keeping me away from my dear blog and blog friends (sniff-sniff!) are:

1. My photography class started.
It is even more fun than I thought it was going to be. We shot our first roll of film early this week and developed our negatives today -- it's a really long process waiting for all the chemicals and the wash baths, and agitating your film and etc...but it was cool to learn the processes and now I can't wait to see the pictures!

{I'm in love with these pants!}

2. Sewing, sewing, sewing. Sarah and I have been spending quite a bit of time in our sewing room drafting, fitting, and testing patterns for jeans, t-shirts, and dresses.
Our mom is an expert pattern maker and has been kind enough to help us every step of the way ;)

3. And last but never least, whenever I'm not at school, work, biking, (taking rejuvenating naps ^_^) or working around the house, I can be found in the kitchen.
I discovered a new ingredient that gives one of my favorite nacho sauces a spicy kick and totally enhances the cheesy flavor. Yum! I'll definitely be sharing my secret here :)
Plus I've been finding some of the most tempting recipes...Coffee Heath bar Ice Cream & Swedish Coffee Bread are two that I'm going to try very, very soon.

Well it is sooo good to be back! I missed blogging a lot as well as catching up on all my favorite reads...it's been too long!

Here is a random ground of pictures that really made me go 'ow soooo sweet!' when I was looking through my favorites. So I arbitrarily decided to capture all the different adorable aspects each picture had into one post.

I think this is about the sweetest Random stuff yet.

I love the darling color of the flowers, it really brightens the picture.

Delicious Turnovers

Don't these turnovers look delicious?!
They would make for a nice breakfast or snack...I especially can't wait to try the cranberry turnovers those look amazing!

Here's the recipe via Simply Recipes

Ingredients

1 large tart baking apple (such as Granny Smith), peeled, cored, cut into 1/4-inch dice
3 Tbsp dried currants
2 Tbsp chopped walnuts
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon corn starch
1/4 cup apple sauce
1/8 teaspoon vanilla
1 frozen puff pastry sheet, thawed OR 2 pâte brisée dough recipes (enough for a double crust pie)
2 Tbsp butter, cut into bits
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon milk

Method

1 Put oven rack in lower third of oven and pre-heat oven to 400°F. Butter a large baking sheet (or use Silpat).

2 In a medium bowl, mix together apples, currants, and walnuts with the sugar, cinnamon, and corn starch, making sure the fruit and nuts are well coated. Mix in the apple sauce and vanilla.

3a Unfold the thawed pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Depending on the size of your puff pastry sheet you are going to want to cut the sheet into either four 5-inch-by-5-inch or six 4-inch-by-4-inch squares.

3b Roll out your pie dough on a lightly floured surface to a 16x11 inch rectangle. Trim the edges to 15x10 inches and cut into six 5x5-inch squares.

4 Divide the apple mixture among the squares, leaving a 1-inch border. If you are using an already prepared puff pastry sheet, dot the mixture in each pastry with a little butter. (If you are using a butter pie dough, you can skip adding the extra butter.) In a small bowl mix the beaten egg with a teaspoon of milk. Use a pastry brush to brush the egg mixture on the border of the pastry.

5 Fold each pastry into a triangle, enclosing the filling, and crimp edges with a fork. Brush the tops of the pastries with more of the egg wash. Cut 2 or 3 small steam vents in the top of each turnover.

6 Place the pastries in the oven and bake at 400°F for 20 minutes, or until puffed and golden.

Cool turnovers to warm before serving.

So I've been seeing the little Ruche button on a lot of blogs, not to mention over my sister's shoulder, but for the most part I had only seen their clothing collection. While their collection is nice it's not really my cup of tea...

However! Last night I was looking for some nice little necklaces on the web, and I landed on the jewelry page of Ruche. And let me tell you, a new love was born ^_^

They have some really cute jewelry; some that are elegant, and others that are simple. Personally I like the necklaces with cute critters.

And once you start looking at necklaces you can't not look at the earrings and rings or bracelets or...shoes :D
Normally I'm an earring type of girl, I love all sorts of earrings but I don't know... these rings are a close second, a really close second.

I think now I understand why so many people like Ruche.
Okay, their love probably stems more from the clothing line, but Sssh.

Random Stuff: Patriotic Crafts

I was looking for some last minute Fourth of July designs to cover the house in when I found a lovely collection of creative Patriotic crafts on Martha Stewart's site.

I think this might be hard a bit hard to ride but I'd give it a try just for fun.

When we were kids Olivia and I used to make so many of these pinwheels, our whole yard was covered in them!

I really like this idea, I'm so gonna try it.

If I had a Gazebo I'd probably make some of these fancy little stars. In fact I think I'll make some of these as encouragement to get a Gazebo :P

Etsy Fav: Shish LOOK Design

The lovely Natasha and her super sweet! designs over at Shish Look Design on Etsy are the latest little beauties to steal my heart. Her fuzzy little felted creations are so cute a button would get jealous :P

I spotted her little shop sitting peacefully in my sister's favs; I know, I'm such a snoop...and Olivia's favorites are at the bottom of our page *scrolls down* Ssssh.

Isn't that little fairy house so magical? I reminds me of the Shire (Hobbit-ville!). If I were a fairy or a Hobbit (or myself :) I'd totally commandeer that baby!

After graduating with a degree in photography, I went on to explore the many different areas of photo work before settling into weddings and portraits.

I worked for a small town newspaper, a successful commercial photographer, a portrait photographer, and a food photographer. All along the way I learned the best of each industry, and broadened my horizons about art and creating great imagery.

Dessert Heaven

These desserts had my mouth watering the instant I found them. Originally I was looking for a tasty lemon cupcake recipe when I stumbled upon all this goodness!

Mini berry cheese cakes with buttery graham cracker crusts...

Pavlova with strawberries and raspberries and mascarpone cream...

Cheese cake in a jar (how neat is that?)...

And so much more...

I was particularly excited to find these little frozen sweeties because the Popsicle molds I was waiting for just arrived in the mail (yay!) and I can't wait to get started experimenting with recipes.

Drawing what you see.

Sometime last year I picked up a drawing book and started to read it. However, that didn't pan out very well, then I started going to school and the book got pushed to the back burner; then slowly it was shoved off the stove... eeeek!

Since I'm on break, I decided to pick it up again while I still have time. And with this second attempt I've made some really good head way, not just in the book but also in my drawings. I'm so excited! When I'm done I plan on doing a before and after post.

The book is called Drawing on the right side of the brain by Betty Edwards. It's a great teaching book, though it doesn't so much focus on teaching you how to draw but instead it teaches you how to draw what you see.

Not that my drawings were bad before *ahem* but it's gotten infinitely better since I started reading, and following the instructions in this book--and I'm barely half way through!

I'm really excited to see what I can accomplish once I've finished the book. Maybe something like this awesome artwork :D

Interior: Pretty Pastels

One thing that just catches my eye about certain homes, that I really find inspiring and beautiful are pastel colors schemes...
Whether it's the paint on the walls or the color of the furnishing or art work, I love it when a room is brightened with those pretty and subtle hues of aqua, green, pink, and yellow.

Steampunk Obession.

I've concluded that Etsy is a very bad website. This may seem like a strange statement but it's oh sooo true. That Etsy site is filled with many lovely and creative items, from jewelery to vintage dresses that evoke such longing in the viewer. But most importantly, when browsing through the pages of Etsy it is so easy to become obsessed.

Which has happened to me quite often...so welcome to my latest Etsy obsession: Steampunk jewelery.

So if it wasn't enough that Etsy had already gotten me addicted to jewelry in general, mainly earrings, I went and found a whole new style of jewelry to become engrossed in Steampunk!

Steampunk in itself is a fascinating subject. Most things involving Steampunk are set back in Victorian England and consist of adding brass, cogs, pipes, clockwork pieces, and brass animals to contraptions that don't need it.

Also taking contemporary technology, airplanes, blimps(or should I say zeppelins), and having them run on steam is also considered very steampunk. A good example of this would be Jules Verne's novels or the Golden Compass movie.

But lets not get carried away...
So while searching through the abundant jewelry pages of Etsy I found this truly fabulous collection of Steampunk goodies.

Fresh Fruit + Lemonade

A few of my favorite things about weekends aside from lounging around and relaxing is having the time to shop for fresh organic fruit at the local farmers markets and also getting to experiment with delicious recipes like this strawberry lemonade beverage I talked about a few weeks ago.

Let me just say, in case any of you were wondering whether or not this recipe rocks...it does!

The strawberry lemonade was so refreshing! I barely had a chance to photograph it before my family started grabbing at it :)

This recipe definitely a keeper and I can't wait to make some more...

And So The Baking Begins!

Today I began searching through one of my favorite baking sites for a few tasty ideas for treats to make over this Summer vacations.

And I must say I found quite a lot of delicious ideas :D

I am a cookie kind of girl. I love cookies, any type but my all time favorite is white chip macadamia, and peanut butter; I also like a good butter cookie. Much to my delight I've found some really promising recipes for both those tasty treats.

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't plan on using this summer just to fulfill the desires of my sweet tooth, but Oooooh how I wish I could :)

But I've also been collecting some ideas for fruit smoothies, beverages, and BBQs. I can't wait to start this home cooking marathon! It's been so long since I last dawned my cozy cooking apron, I miss it so much!

Day One...

So today is the first day of Summer vacation--and I must say I have quite the to do list of tasks that have accumulated over the semester.

Which is to say, I spent this first day cleaning, reorganizing and tossing away excess papers. Yep, not how I fantasized what my first day off would be like. Nope, this does not compare at all.

However, not all the items on my to do list are as tiresome as the first. And now that I've gotten the (delayed) Spring cleaning out of the way I can move on to the fun stuff!

Reading books which I didn't have time for during school. Yeah, I know, I'm one of those crazy people who seeks out books to read in Summertime. Who's with me? Quite frankly I think Summer is the best time for reading...along with Spring, Winter and Fall.

I also need to get my faithful bike fixed, it broke down early last month and I haven't had time to fix it--or post about it's demise for that matter.

And then, there is the whole schedule of Summer cooking, outings and shopping but Sssshhh it's a surprise.

So here's to a Summer of fun...

'Penelope' is a cute and whimsical modern fairytale about a girl and her family curse. It's set in some dreamy European countryside and features some really fun and creative costumes.

But not only were the costumes very fantastical, beautiful, and at times elegant they were also very believable and timeless. However, in this movie it's not only the costumes that stand out, but the clever concept. I loved how they managed to merge a traditional fairytale into a modern story.

Another plus about this movie was James McAvoy, playing the part of Prince Charming (Max)...he is sooo charming *sigh*

Anyway...moving on.
The set's design and surrounding scenery were very intricately done and had a real sense of magic to it.

Also Reese Witherspoon made an appearance as Annie the funny fast-talking vespa-messenger. (She was too adorable :)

All in all, Penelope was a fun movie, enchanting cinematography with a sweet storyline. So if your still mourning the loss of Ned and Chuck of Pushing Daisies (like myself sniff-sniff) you will definitely enjoy it. If your an unabashed fan of fairy tales you'll just adore 'Penelope'.

Camera Wanted!

Just when I'd begun to truly enjoy my old low quality camcorder, and just adventured into playing with it's different settings and manual mode it died. It was old after all, 6yrs old (that's 200 in technology years :), and it had lived a good long life. I suppose it was just time for me to move on.

Which lead me to spending my weekend researching the web thoroughly for a good replacement cam. My how things have changed since 2005! Cameras have not only advanced technologically but now you need to learn an encrypted code of Geekie gibberish to understand them.

Since I've never really shopped for a camera before, this is a new experience and it's kinda exciting. I never understood how people (my mother) could get addicted to researching electronics. But once you start you can't STOP!

I'm looking forward to the moment when all this researching pays off and I'm sitting in the living room with a pair of scissors in hand cutting open the box to find my own little Canon baby tucked in bubble wrap.

And then my adventure into the manipulation of the manual setting and exposure begins and a beautifully filmed cinema follows...*oh sigh*

The Great Outdoors

Fine weather and Finals have made me long for somewhere relaxing to be. Somewhere besides school on these gorgeous pre-summer days we've been having. It's times like these when I wish I had one of those giant gardens that dreamers get lost in.

You know, the ones with a fish pound and an arched Japanese bridge under a cherry blossom tree...

With little blossoms sprouting in cracked pots or delicate bowls...

Or hanging in bushels from trees...

Or maybe tucked in the pocket of my best faded jeans :D

There would also be a nice moss covered path, trailing off into dreams.

That would be sooooooooo nice :D

Strawberry Lemonade

Lately with the weather starting to heat up and since I started making more of an effort to maintain a healthy and balanced diet, I have been craving fresh cool drinks and lots of fresh fruit!

I'm a little tired of eating out for lunch or snacking on granola bars and chips and calling that a meal...so I'm collecting a bunch of recipes for fresh meals and fresh delicious beverages to make in the place of all that icky unhealthy food :)

Here's a recipe I'm going to test out this weekend:

{Strawberry Lemonade}

ingredients

- 1-1/2 cups sugar
- 4 cups water
- 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled
- 1 Tbsp. finely shredded lemon peel
- 1 cup lemon juice (4 to 5 lemons)

directions

1. In a small saucepan combine 1 cup of the sugar and 1 cup of the water; cook and stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Set aside to cool.

2. In a blender combine remaining 3 cups water, 1/2 cup sugar, and the strawberries; process until smooth. Transfer to a 2-quart pitcher; add cooled syrup, lemon peel, and lemon juice. Stir to combine. Fill pitcher with crushed ice. Makes 8, 8-oz. servings.

3.Make-ahead tip: Prepare lemonade but do not add ice. Cover and chill up to 8 hours. Add ice and serve.

Boy has it been too long since the last time I went for a run...baby I'm out of shape!
Ok it's not like I haven't been exercising and getting my cardio in, I mean I do ride my bike everywhere I go (work, school, ice cream shops, coffee shops, library, etc). But nonetheless, biking like a car-less maniac hasn't kept me in good 'runners' shape.

I felt like I couldn't breathe when I first started running and after two miles and one measly hill I wanted to stop, sit down and die!

I didn't of course :)

I just slowed down the already slow pace I was chugging away at and kept it to a light easy jog, you know the kind of jog that's almost slower than walking? Those are good for recovering!

It took me 15 minutes to run my first two miles, which for me is particularly sloooooow, but at any rate I am SO glad I dragged myself away from my math books and got outside for a little exercise...

Not only was it a beautiful warm and windy day I feel so refreshed right now, I could do cart wheels!

{cooling off with some stretching & yoga was so nice!}

So here's my list of activities I intend to start implementing into my schedule more frequently:

1. More running (loads of it)
2. Yoga
3. Swimming
4. Jump roping (I could definitely use some tuning up, the sister keeps on challenging me to jump-roping contests every chance she gets)
5. And maybe some dancing :)

Cherry Almond Cupcakes

This afternoon I celebrated my half day off and the ending of another school week by baking some delicious Cherry Almond Cupcakes...

They were scrum, scrum! Even though I didn't have any almond extract and they were in fact Cherry (almond-less) cupcakes, they tasted just as good!

Anh of Odyssa Bags creates some of the cutest little travel bags for a variety of occasions. All of her bags are finished with a gorgeous embroidered illustrations in an array of colors and designs.

A Not So Lazy Weekend

So much to do this weekend it's not even funny!
The sister and I have finals coming up soon in a few weeks so we're trying to prepare ourselves for that.
I have two math finals and a final for a research class, ick and ew! And Sarah has finals for English, Psychology, and Math, yuck!
Not to mention we've got a ca-boodle of cleaning and work to do around the house!

And then to make matters even better (not), you know how it is when there's a lot to do but you don't really feel like doing any of it?
well I seem to be suffering from that at the moment :)

Ours was wonderful, we took our Momsie out for Mother's day for some delicious Indian food and then to go see a movie. It was a lot of fun hanging out with the entire family.
The only thing about it being such a fun & relaxing weekend is now I'm in weekend-mode and I don't want to get back to work hehehe :)

Summer Plans...

So I decided to do something fun with my Summer (as far as studying goes) while simultaneously continuing to chip away at my degree.

I'm going to take a photography class! A film photography class to be more specific :)
I've always wanted to learn how to do this & I'm super thrilled for the class!

After a year straight of math, math boot-camps, and more math I'm ready to take a siesta from all the equations and formulas and trigonometric terms! And quite frankly, I think I might just explode if I take a math class in Summer.

It's never fun trying to squish huge classes like math into half semesters like Summer & Winter terms...that's why I don't feel too guilty about taking photography :)

I get to take a nice little break and have some fun and I'm still working towards my goals...YAY!!! It's too awesome!
